This history of double colonization helps to explain the double invisibility of Mexican American literature. The Native American element was first subdued by the Spanish colonization, and then the Mexican/Mestizo element got suppressed by the mainline American culture. Guillermo E. Herndndez states about the dilemma of Chicano literature: "Writing on Chicano literature involves entering a new field of inquiry, one that has grown largely at the margins of the American literary mainstream and is generally ignored in the Spanish-speaking world" (ix). This just highlights the urgency to study Chicano literature from various angles in order to understand American literature in general.
Owing to the complicated history and various origins, the task to define Chi-cano literature becomes all the more subtle and difficult. Broadly speaking, Mexican American literature refers to the literature created by the people living in the United States with the Mexican descent. Chicano literature is more historically defined as a part of its overall development.
