ClaudeBrownwasborninNewYorkCityandgrewupinHarlem.Atageseventeen,afterservingseveraltermsinreformschool,heleftHarlemforGreenwichVillage.Hewentontoreceiveabachelor'sdegreefromHowardUniversityandattendedlawschool.HealsowroteabookcalledTheChildrenofHamin1976.ManchildinthePromisedLandevolvedfromanarticlehepublishedinDissentmagazineduringhisfirstyearatcollege.Hediedin2002attheageof64.NathanMcCall,authorofMakesMeWannaHoller,hasworkedasajournalistforTheWashingtonPost.Currently,heteachesintheAfricanAmericanStudiesDepartmentatEmoryUniversityandlivesinAtlanta,Georgia.
