CaoXueqin(?1715-63)wasbornintoafamilywhichforthreegenerationsheldtheofficeofCommissionerofImperialTextilesinNanking,afamilysowealthytheywereabletoentertaintheEmperorfourtimes.However,calamityovertookthemandtheirpropertywasconsfiscated.CaoXueqinwaslivinginpovertywhenhewrotehisfamousnovelTheStoryoftheStone.
