WilliamGoldingwasborninCornwallin1911andwaseducatedatMarlboroughGrammarSchoolandatBrasenoseCollege,Oxford.Beforehebecameaschoolmasterhewasanactor,alecturer,asmall-boatsailorandamusician.Anowrarevolume,Poems,appearedin1934.In1940hejoinedtheRoyalNavyandsawactionagainstbattleships,andalsotookpartinthepursuitoftheBismarck.HefinishedthewarasaLieutenantincommandofarocketship,whichwasofftheFrenchcoastfortheD-Dayinvasion,andlaterattheislandofWalcheren.AfterthewarhereturnedtoBishopWordsworth'sSchoolinSalisburyandwastherewhenhisfirstnovel,LordoftheFlies,waspublishedin1954.Hegaveupteachingin1961.LordoftheFlieswasfilmedbyPeterBrookin1963.Goldinglistedhishobbiesasmusic,chess,sailing,archaeologyandclassicalGreek(whichhetaughthimself).ManyofthesesubjectsappearinhisessaycollectionsTheHotGatesandAMovingTarget.HewontheBookerPrizeforhisnovelRitesofPassagein1980,andwasawardedtheNobelPrizeforLiteraturein1983.Hewasknightedin1988.Hediedathishomeinthesummerof1993.TheDoubleTongue,anovelleftindraftathisdeath,waspublishedinJune1995.
