第1章蚂蚁和蚂蚱炎热的夏日，一只蚂蚱在草茎间跳来跳去，他一边练习蹦跳、飞跃和旋转，一边这儿吸一点汁液，那儿吸一点汁液。他发现草茎下面满是灰尘的地面上有一只蚂蚁，她正费力地拖着一粒谷物。
蚂蚱跳落到蚂蚁旁边。“你看到我优美的一跃了吗？”他问。
“没有，我没有看见，”蚂蚁说，“如果我低着头，伸直脊背，搬运东西的时候会容易一些。”“可是为什么要搬运东西呢？”蚂蚱问，“看起来这是一件又热又脏的活儿。”“我必须帮助我的姐妹们储存过冬的食物。”蚂蚁一边回答，一边匆匆前进。
听到蚂蚁这么说，蚂蚱笑个不停。冬天还有好几个月才来呢。如果任由美丽的夏天过去，不在这时候飞跃、蹦跳、玩耍，那是多么傻啊！
蚂蚱每天都会看到蚂蚁搬运谷物、种子和人们扔掉的面包屑。看起来，这种事情蚂蚱是永远也不会乐意做的。他只是一天到晚跳舞，什么时候饿了，就吸食青草的汁液。
有一天，蚂蚱跳跃到松脆的褐色落叶堆上。这时，一些雪白的、湿漉漉的东西正好落在他的头上。下雪了！
“冬天来了，”蚂蚱惊道，“我必须收集食物了！”他蹦来跳去，转来转去，但是在白雪下面，已经找不到绿色的青草了。
