Thisthesisconsistsofsevenchapters.ItisdesignedtosurveyandanalysetheteachingsoftheBodhisattvaidealanditsgradualdevelopmentinselectedBuddhistscriptures.ThemainissuesrelatedtotheevolutionoftheteachingsoftheBodhisattvaideal.TheBodhisattvadoctrineandpracticeareexaminedinsixmajorstages.ThesestagescorrespondtothescholarlyperiodisationofBuddhistthoughtinIndia，namely（1）Bodhisattvasqualitiesandcareerintheearlyscriptures，（2）thedebatesconcerningtheBodhisattvaintheearlyschools，（3）theearlyMahāyānaportrayaloftheBodhisattvaandtheacceptanceofthesixperfections，（4）theBodhisattvadoctrineintheearlierprajnāpārāmitā-sūtras，（5）theBodhisattvapracticesinthelaterprajnāpārāmtexts，and（6）theevolutionofthesixperfections（pāramitā）inawiderangeofMahāyānatexts.Chaptersevenanalysesthedevelopedtheoriesofthreeperfections：sila，dhyāmaandpāramitā.ThedebateontheBodhisattvaidealinthesecondcenturyisalsoexaminedineachchapter.DuringtheformationoftheBodhisattvapractices，twosystemsofperfections（pāramitās）aroseinBuddhistscripturesandhistory.Inallprobabilitythesystemofsixperfectionswasformedbeforethatoftenperfections，andbecamemorediffusedinMahpāramitāyanascriptures..TheBodhisattvaidealevolvedfordifferentreasons，butchieflyinresponsetoreligioustendencies，demands，andnecessitiesofculturesandhistoricalperiodsinwhichtheBodhisattvaidealflourished.TheBodhisattvaswisdomartdcompassionasideologyandmethodingeneratingthebenefitofsentientbeings，arguablyconstitutethebasisofBodhisattvaphilosophyandpractice.ThescripturesselectedforinvestigationnotonlypresentdiversifiedteachingsandfeaturesoftheBodhisattvaideal，butresultinasystematicmodelthatimprovesourunderstandingoftheirevolution.
