GeorgeGissingwasborninWakefield,Yorkshire,in1857.Abrilliantstudent,hewonascholarshiptoOwensCollegeandvariousprizesthatdistinguishedhimfromhispeers-buthisglitteringacademiccareerwascutshortwhenhestolemoneyfromhisfellowstudentsinordertokeepayoungprostitute,MarianneHarrison,fromthestreets.Expelledfromuniversityandhavingspentamonthinprison,heleftforAmerica,againfallingintofinancialdestitutionandalsonear-starvationinChicago,anepisodethatformsoneofthebestsectionsinNewGrubStreet.Afterashortandill-fatedmarriagetoMarianne,bynowanalcoholicwhodiedfiveyearsaftertheirseparation,hemarriedEdithUnderwood,whofiveyearsaftertheirseparationwascertifiedinsane.From1899,unabletoobtainadivoirce,fromEdith,GissinglivedinabigamousmarriageinFrancewithGabrielleFleury,whohadapproachedhimabouttranslatingNewGrubStreet.PerhapsthegreatestEnglishrealistnovelist,Gissingpublishedovertwentybooksbeforehisdeathin1903.
