JOHNBUNYAN(1628-88)wasborninElstow,avillagenearBedford.Hewenttoschoolinthevillageandbecameatravellingbrazierortinker,likehisfather.In1644hejoinedtheParliamentaryarmy,andservedinthegarrisonofNewportPagnell,aBedfordshiretown,until1646.Hemarriedin1649andhadfourchildren,thoughthenameofhisfirstwifeisunknown.Aspartofherdowryshebroughttwopopularbooksofdevotion;andthese,alongwithaseriesofexperiences,triggeredacomplexconversionexperience,notfullyresolveduntil1653,whenBunyanjoinedaseparatistcongregationinBedford.SoonBunyanbeganpreachingandengaginincontroversywithotherreiligousgroups.Hewrotehisfirstbook,SomeGospelTruthsOpenedin1656.SoonaftertheRestorationhewasarrestedforunlicensedpreachinginthevillageofLowerSamselland,becauseherefusedtostopperaching,remaininprisoninBedfordfortwelveyears.Hisaccountofhistrialwaspublishedposthumouslyin1765.Hewasimprisonedagainforaboutsixmonthsin1676.Hecontinuedtowrite,andtopreachinBedfordshireandLondon.In1678hepublishedthefirstpartofThePilgrim'sProgress.Itbecameamimmediatebestseller,runningthroughtwelveditionsandbeingtranslatedintoDutch,FrenchandWelshduringBunyan'slifetime;sincethenithasbeentraslatedintomorethantwohundredlanguages.Itscounterpart,TheLifeandDeathofMrBadman(1682)isepicincope.ThesecondpartofThePilgrim'sProgresscameoutin1684,partlyinresponsetoanumberofimitationsandspurioussequels.ABookforBoysandGirls,oneoftheearliestexamplesofliteratureforchildren,waspublishedin1686.Bunyandiedin1688forafevercontractedwhileridingfromReadingtoLondontotrytoeffectareconciliationbetweenafatherandson.Heleftanumberofworksinmanuscript,manyofthempublishedbyChalresDoeinhisfolioof1692,whichalsocontainedthefirst(brief)biographyofBunyan.ROGERPOOLEYteachesatKeeleUniversity.HisCambridgePh.D.thesisonBunyanwaspartlysupervisedbythelateRogerSharrock,theeditorofthepreviousPenguinClassicsPilgrim'sProgress.HeistheauthorofEnglishProseoftheSeventeenthCentury(1993)andanumberofshorterpiecesonBunyanandotherseventeenth-centuryfigures.Hehasco-editedTheLordoftheJourney;AReaderinChristinaSpiritualityandTheDiscerningReader:LiteratureandTheoryinChristianPerspecitve.HeisanactivememberoftheInternationalJohnBunyanSociety.--ThistextreferstoanalternatePaperbackedition.
