HansChristianAndersenwasbornin1805inOdense,Denmark.Hisfatherwasapoorcobbler,hismothernearlyilliterate.Atfourteen,armedwithlittlemorethansheerdetermination,AndersenwenttoCopenhagen,wherehesucceededinwinningthepatronageofseveralprominentcitizens,andacquiredsomeformalschooling.In1829,hispoems,plays,andtravelsketchesbegantoappear.In1835,hisfirstnovel,TheImprovisatore,metwithconsiderablesuccess.Thatsameyear,hepublishedhisfirstcollectionoftales,tobefollowedovertheyearsbyfurthercreationsinagenrehemadesingularlyhisown.Hislifewasmarkedbyextensivetravels,enormouspopularity,thefriendshipofmanyleadingpersonalitiesoftheera,andthehighesthonorsofhisnativeland.Bythetimeofhisdeathin1875,thisgauche,awkwardfigure,borninthehumblestofcircumstances,hadenjoyedacareerthatmightwellhavecomeoutofoneofhismostimaginativetales.
