Design is a big subject and comprises spaces, objects and technologies from a recent urban development to the computer chip, with interiors, fashion, craft, graphics and the digital lying in-between. The purpose of this volume is to provide a critical overview of all design disciplines, to stimulate inter-disciplinary debate and consider undiscovered convergences and synergies. This volume is innovative in the breadth of its coverage, and the way it will relate to the curricula in various aspects of design teaching at undergraduate and post graduate levels. The focus of the 24 specially commissioned essays is on developments on a transnational, global basis, reflecting the current state of design history and theory. Of interest to design practitioners, historians and theorists this illustrated collection traces design and design thinking over the past 70 years.
