【作者简介】

　　赫伯特·乔洽·威尔斯（Herbert George wells，1888—1946），英国著名小说家、思想家、历史学家、社会改革家。他毕业于英国皇家学院，任教于伦敦大学，曾在赫胥黎的实验室工作，后转入新闻工作，是英国费边社的成员。

　　作为一名高产作家，威尔斯创作了大量举世闻名的著作，例如科幻小说《时间机器》《隐身人》等。此外他还有相当数量的历史学和社会学著作，例如《世界史纲》《未来的发现》 《创造中的人类》《机械和科学发展对人类生活和思想可能产生的作用》《现代乌托邦》等。本书《世界史纲》就是他创作于1918年—1920年间的经典之作。
