Some marks and soiling to the front and rear covers.Foxing to title page and frontispiece engraving. Water stain along right hand and bottom edges of the frontispiece. Similar water stain along left hand and bottom edges of the title page.Browning/toning to edges of the pages of the text. Scattered foxing to some pages but generally the text is in good condition.Water stain in the bottom left and corner of both maps in text. Some browning/toning and light foxing to the folding map. Foxing on reverse side of the folding map.Browning/toning to the white surrounds of the seven acquatint plates. A few marks on the some of the plates but generally they are in good condition.About this BookHenry Ellis, a noted diplomat and historian, served as third commissioner on the Earl Amherst's embassy to China in 1816, sent out by George III to protest the ill-treatment of British subjects. The embassy left England in February 1816 and arrived at Canton in July. of that year.A considerable delay followed before permission was finally given for Amherst and his entourage to proceed to Tientsin where strenuous efforts were made to persuade Lord Amherst to kowtow (nine strikings of the forehead to the ground) to the Emperor Khien Lung when they finally met. He eventually agreed to a compromise which allowed him to merely bow the requisite number of times and was then allowed to travel to the emperor's palace at Yuen-ming-yuen. Amherst arrived on the night of the 29th. August and was summoned to the emperor's presence almost immediately. He refused, objecting to the rudeness of the messengers, and pointing out that he was tired and about to retire for the night. The embassy was immediately, that same night, sent back to Tientsin, arriving back in Canton the following January. As if this humiliation was not enough, their ship, the Alceste, was wrecked off the coast of Sumatra on the return home. Happily, all hands survived, and another ship was found to carry them home again.After leaving China there was further trouble ahead as their ship, the Alceste, ran aground on rocks at Lew-chew (Okinawa) and sank. Upon rescue the embassy were taken to Java. Their voyage home to England took them via St Helena where Lord Amherst and the author himself had the opportunity to talk to Napoleon.
