The author was an American missionary at Fuhchau (Foochow), capital of Fukien province in south-eastern China for the previous fourteen years. Nearly two thirds of the book appeared in anonymous letters in the China Mail, a newspaper published in Hong Kong. The illustrations are derived chiefly from photographic views, and from pen and ink sketches drawn by Chinese artists. Included are chapters on agriculture, betrothal and marriage customs, married life and children, superstitious treatment of disease, death, mourning, an burial customs, religious belefs, education, annual customs and festivals, superstitions, business and social customs, meritorious or charitable practices, charms and omens, fortune-telling, opium and opium-smoking, and Peking.
