- Ma Feng, born in 1922 in Juyi Village in Xiaoyi County, Shanxi, joined the Chinese Communist Party's Eighth Route Army in the spring of 1938, first in combat and then in propaganda, painting posters and wallpaper illustrations and writing slogans. In 1940 he was sent to study fine arts as a trainee at the Lu Xun Academy of Literature and Art in Yan'an, but he had a keen interest in literature and began to write himself. In the spring of 1942 he published his first story "First Reconnaissance" in Liberation Daily. In 1944 he co- authored with Xi Rong the successful Heroes of La- liang, a novel set in the anti-Japanese war, which was widely acclaimed upon publication. In 1949 Ma Feng became editor-in-chief of the Jinsui Publishing Housc and a council member of the Chinese Writers' Association and published numerous short stories such as "Jinbao's Mother" and "Vendetta". Later he returned to his native province and was elected vice-chairman of the Shanxi branch of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and chairman of the Shanxi Writers' Association. He ofter went deep into the countryside and shared the joys and hardships of the Shanxi peas- ants, producing many fine works such as “I Knew All Along". "My First Superior", "Liu Hulan" and the screenplay The Youth of Our Village. Ma Feng took up his pen again after the "cultural revolution" when he. like many other Chinese writers, was compelled to stop writing for ten years. Together with Sun Qian, he wrote the screenplays Tears and The Veterans. Among his voluminous short stories and travel notes, "The 'On- the-Spot' Wedding" won a National Short-story Award, and many have been translated into English, French, Italian, Korean, Mongolian and Vietnamese. Ma Feng is now chairman of the Shanxi Federation of Literary and Art Circles and president of the Popular Literature Association.
