　　John Griffith “Jack” London (1876–1916) was an American author, journalist, and social activist. He was a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone. Some of his most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories “To Build a Fire”, “An Odyssey of the North”, and “Love of Life” . He also wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as “The Pearls of Parlay ” and “The Heathen ”, and of the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf .
　　Often troubled by physical ailments, during his thirties London developed kidney disease of unknown origin. He died of renal failure on November 22, 1916 on the ranch.

【作者简介】

　　杰克·伦敦（1876-1916），美国著名现实主义作家。出生于美国加利福尼亚旧金山的一个破产农民家庭。他从小参加体力劳动，受尽生活折磨。后来做过童工、工人和水手，也当过劫取牡蛎的“蚝贼”。1893年由于美国发生严重经济危机，杰克·伦敦以无业游民罪被捕。1897年到阿拉斯加淘金，结果一粒金子也没淘到却得了坏血病。从此，他开始了文学创作生涯，并于1900年发表统称为“北方故事”的系列小说。他从1900年起连续发表的许多中短篇小说，因其作品大都带有浓厚的社会主义色彩，因此有人认为他是宣扬社会主义的作家，但也有人认为他是表现个人主义与民众哲学的自然主义作家。40岁时，他以自杀结束了自己的生命。
　　杰克·伦敦在自己16年的创作生涯中留下了50部著作，其中长篇小说19部。他的作品不仅在美国本土广为流传，而且受到世界各国人民的欢迎，是最受中国读者欢迎的外国作家之一。代表作有《马丁·伊登》、《野性的呼唤》、《热爱生命》（短篇小说）、《白牙》（又译作《雪虎》）等。
