CaoXueqin(?1715-63)wasbornintoafamilywhichforthreegenerationsheldtheofficeofCommissionerofImperialTextilesinNanking,afamilysowealthytheywereabletoentertaintheEmperorfourtimes.However,calamityovertookthemandtheirpropertywasconsfiscated.CaoXueqinwaslivinginpovertywhenhewrotehisfamousnovelTheStoryoftheStone.DavidHawkeswasProfessorofChineseatOxfordUniversityfrom1959-1971andaResearchFellowofAllSoulsCollegefrom1973-1983.HenowlivesinretirementinWales.
