【作者简介】

EdwardGibbonwasbornin1737inPutney,England,andwastheonlychildofhisparentstosurviveinfancy.Althoughhiseducationwasfrequentlyinterruptedbyillhealth,hisknowledgewasfar-reaching.HisbriefcareerasanundergraduateatMagdalenCollege,Oxford,endedwhenhejoinedtheCatholicChurch.HisfathersenthimtoLausanne,inSwitzerland,where,whilestudyingGreekandFrenchforthenextfiveyears,here-joinedtheProtestantChurch.In1761hepublishedhisEssaisurl'étudedelaLittérature;theEnglishversionappearedin1764.Meanwhile,GibbonservedasacaptainintheHampshireMilitiauntil1763,whenhereturnedtotheContinent.ItwaswhilehewasinRomein1764thathefirstconceivedtheworkthatwaseventuallytobecomeTheHistoryoftheDeclineandFalloftheRomanEmpire.In1774,afterthedeathofhisfather,GibbonsettledinLondonandwaselectedtoParliamentwherehesatforthenexteightyears,althoughheneveroncespokeintheCommons.HealsotookhisplaceamongtheliterarycirclesofLondon.ThefirstvolumeofhisfamousHistorywaspublishedin1776;itwashighlypraisedforitslearningandstylebutincurredsomecensureforitstreatmentoftheearlyChristians.Thesecondandthirdvolumesappearedin1781andthefinalthree,whichwerewritteninLausanne,in1788.Hediedwhileonavisittohisfriend,LordSheffield,whoposthumouslyeditedGibbon'sautobiographicalpapersandpublishedthemin1796.
