SirArthurConanDoyle(1859-1930)wasborninEdinburghandstudiedmedicineattheuniversitythere,afteraneducationinJesuitschoolsinLancashireandAustria.Hehadanactivecareerasadoctorandopthalmologist,includingvolunteeringinBloemfonteinduringtheBoerWar,butalsointhepublicsphereasDeputy-LieutenantofSurrey,writerofthewidelyreadhistoricalworksandpoliticalpamphlets,vociferousopponentofmiscarriagesofjusticeandtwiceparliamentarycandidate(althoughhewasneverelected).Yetitwasforhisbrilliantcreationofthefirstscientificdetective,SherlockHolmes,thatheachievedgreatfame-sogreatthatafterhekilledSherlockofftoconcentratemoreonhishistoricalwork,hewasforcedtobringthecharacterbacktolifeinTheHoundoftheBaskervilles.Inlateryears,theJesuit-educatedConanDoyleconvertedtoSpiritualism,writingworkssuchasTheComingoftheFairies,andwasafriendofthemagicianHoudini.Hediedofaheartattackin1930,attheageofseventy-one.
