PREFACETheevidenceprovidedbytheliteratureindicatethattheso-called“SilkRoad”wasnotonlyjusttherouteofcommoditycirculation,butalsotheroutesofethnicmigration,militaryconquest,belieftransmission,presentingtributeandgrantinggiftsinreturn,andtheroutethatwealthytraderstraveled.Todaywhenwefocusonthe“SilkRoad”,wemainlyfocusonEast-Westculturalexchange,and“Silk”herebecomesasymbolofculturalcarrier.Thepurposeofstudyonthe“SilkRoad”istosearchforthelosttrajectoryofEastWestculturalexchange.Tostudythe“SilkRoad”,weareboundtouseEast-Westliteratures.ThemutualverificationofEast-WestliteratureshasalwaysbeenthestatethatthescholarswhoresearchthehistoryofEast-Westculturalexchangeaspireto.Unfortunately,thismayonlyhappenfortuitously.TheEast-Westliteraturesarelikethedonkey’slipandthehorse’smouth—ifoneisslightlycareless,onewouldsuffertheridiculeofdescribingneitherdonkeyorhorse.Infact,theEastWestculturalexchangeofitselfcanberegardedasaprocessofdonkey’slipmeetingthehorse’smouth.Atleast,“neitherdonkeynorhorse”,asintermediateproducts,isverycommon.Soonemightaswelllaughandsay:theresearchofthehistoryofEast-Westculturalexchangeisastudyofthedonkey’slipandthehorse’smouth.
