随着来华留学生人数的不断增加．对外汉语教学面临着机遇和挑战。留学生在中国生活学习期间经常面临跨文化交流冲突。有学者指出，二语语用能力是解决跨文化交流困难的关键所在。
《来华留学生汉语语用能力发展研究（英文版）》采用调查法与人种志个案研究方法分析韩国、俄罗斯与法国三国留学生汉语请求言语行为的语用策略特点，剖析他们语用能力发展的轨迹，透析影响他们语用能力发展的主要因素。研究结果显示，韩国留学生的请求策略与中国学生的相似，法国留学生与中国学生相差甚远，而俄罗斯学生处于两者之间。
另外，《来华留学生汉语语用能力发展研究（英文版）》基于人种志个案研究提炼出用于解释留学生语用能力发展的理论模型。该模型指出，文化背景与情景因素会引发学习者对动机与文化适应态度进行重塑，而动机与文化适应态度直接决定了学习者参与语言交流的宽度与深度，这会对语用语言能力与社会语用能力的发展产生一定的影响。
