The Expression and Characteristics of Privacy in

    A Dream ofRedMansions

Abstract Based on Altman’s definition ofprivacy．the examples ofprivacy m A Dream

ofRedMansions are sorted out and analyzed．The results show that privacy exists widely

in the book and expressed in various forms．Further research finds that these privacies have

the characteristics of universalism，utilitarianism and relativity．The research on this

cultural phenomenon is conducive to understanding China’S privacy culture and

appreciatingADreamofRedMansionsfrom anewperspective．

1 Introduction

    A Dream ofRed Mansions represents the peak of Chinese anciem novels，and has

become the mark and depot of the national traditional culture．It describes the reality of

China in the 18m century and illustrates the social life in the late feudal times Nowadays，

great amount ofresearch has been done on this book from different cultural aspects，such

as folk culture，name culture，calligraphy culture，tea culture，Weiqi culture and SO on(Hu

Wenbin 1994，1997，1998；MengBaoyue 2014；ZhangQi 2012)．Butitis hardtofmd any

researches_m China on its privacy culture．However，Cathy Silber，a western scholar，has

madea researchontheprivacyinthisbook(Cathy2002)．Inhisarticle‘‘PrivacyinADream

ofRedMansion”，he mainly talks about the breach diagnostic and mechanisms ofcontrol

ofprivacy．Silber’S article indicates that the author ofA Dream ofRed Mansion shows

himself and his characters possessed of a very acute sense of what is private and of
