CharlotteZolotowwasbornin1915inNorfolk,Virginia,butgrewupinseveralcities,includingDetroit,NewYork,andBoston.SheattendedtheUniversityofWisconsinatMadison,andshortlyafterwardreturnedtoNewYork,wherein1938shebeganworkingatHarperCollins,thenHarper&Brothers.

Shestartedasasecretary,butmovedintoaneditorialcareer,workingwithUrsulaNordstrom.TheirsharedbeliefsandtheexcitementofworkingwithfinewritersandartistsbroughttoHarpergenerationsofextraordinaryauthorsandillustratorsandgaveHarperChildren'sBookstheirfresh,innovativequality.Talentwasnurtured;booksoflastingvaluewerecreated,manystilllovedandreaddecadesaftertheywerefirstpublished.AsJeanMercierwroteinPublishersWeekly,CharlotteZolotowwouldbeamongtheWho'sWhoofanyage,notonlyastheauthorofbooksofherown,butasaforcemajeurebehindmanychildren'sbooksonthedistinctivelistofHarper.

CharlotteZolotowhasreceivednumerousawardsandhonors,includingtheReginaMedal(2002)presentedbytheCatholicLibraryAssociation,theUniversityofMinnesota'sIrwinKerlanAward(1986),theUniversityofSouthernMississippi'sSilverMedallion(1990),theChristopherAward(1974),andtheHarperGoldMedalforOutstandingEditorialAchievement(1974).Ofongoingsignificanceistheawardestablishedin1998inhernamebytheUniversityofWisconsin,Madison.TheCharlotteZolotowAward,presentedannuallybytheUniversity'sCooperativeCenterforChildren'sBooks,isgivenannuallytotheauthorofthebestpicturebooktextpublishedintheUnitedStatesintheprecedingyear.

The1991resolutionofgratitudegiventoCharlotteZolotowbytheAmericanLibraryAssociationcallshercontributiontochildren'sliteraturefarreaching.Thatreachextendsfarindeed.Itbeginswiththemanybooksshehaswrittencarryhervisionintotheheartsofchildrenpast,present,andfuture.
