CharlesDickenswasbornin1812nearPortsmouthwherehisfatherwasaclerkinthenavypayoffice.ThefamilymovedtoLondonin1823,buttheirfortuneswereseverelyimpaired.Dickenswassenttoworkinablacking-warehousewhenhisfatherwasimprisonedfordebt.Bothexperiencesdeeplyaffectedthefuturenovelist.In1833hebegancontributingstoriestonewspapersandmagazines,andin1836startedtheserialpublicationofPickwickPapers.Thereafter,Dickenspublishedhismajornovelsoverthecourseofthenexttwentyyears,fromNicholasNicklebytoLittleDorrit.HealsoeditedthejournalsHouseholdWordsandAlltheYearRound.DickensdiedinJune1870.
