内容紹介 This book is a cultural and social history of the Sino-Japanese War of 189495. It focuses on the ways in which Japan’s first modern war shaped the emerging national consciousness of the Japanese people through a variety of modern institutions and mass media, ranging from the popular press, theater, and song to veteran’s relief funds, memorial services for the war dead, and the construction of public monuments. Through concrete examples and detailed examination of these phenomena, Prof. Saya demonstrates the decisive role they played in the formation of the modern Japanese nation-state. In his analysis, the war was a crucible in which this national identity was molded in ways that placed Japan in conflict with its Asian neighbors. The media are shown to have played a central role in the formation of the nationalism that served as the base of popular support for Japan’s colonial adventurism in continental Asia, the legacy of which continues to haunt Japan’s relations with Asia. Yet paradoxically, Japan’s nationalism and its success at building a unified nation-state also served as a model for the other nations of the region. The book’s goal is to provide the historical context for better understanding and interpreting this complex duality imbedded in the history of modern Japan.
