　　WhenIfirstdecidedtowriteabookonstringtheory，morethantenyearsago，mymemoriesofmystudentyearsweremuchmorevividthantheyaretoday.Still，Irememberthatoneofthegreatestpleasureswasfindingatextthatmadeadifficultsubjectaccessible，andIhopedtoprovidethesameforstringtheory.
　　Thus，myfirstpurposewastogiveacoherentintroductiontostringtheory，basedonthePolyakovpathintegralandconformalfieldtheory.Nopreviousknowledgeofstringtheoryisassumed.Idoassumethatthereaderisfamiliarwiththecentralideasofgeneralrelativity，suchasmetricsandcurvature，andwiththeideasofquantumfieldtheorythroughnon-Abeliangaugesymmetry.Originallyafullcourseofquantumfieldtheorywasassumedasaprerequisite，butitbecameclearthatmanystudentswereeagertolearnstringtheoryassoonaspossible，andthatothershadtakencoursesonquantumfieldtheorythatdidnotemphasizethetoolsneededforstringtheory.Ihavethereforetriedtogiveaself-containedintroductiontothosetools.
　　Asecondpurposewastoshowhowsomeofthesimplestfour-dimensionalstringtheoriesconnectwithpreviousideasforunifyingtheStandardModel，andtocollectgeneralresultsonthephysicsoffour-dimensionalstringtheoriesasderivedfromworld-sheetandspacetimesymmetries.Newdevelopmentshaveledtoathirdgoal，whichistointro-ducetherecentdiscoveriesconcerningstringduality，M-theory，D-branes，andblackholeentropy.
