【前言】
雅思考试根据考生的出国目的分为两类。凡是计划出国留学，攻读学士、硕士或博士学位的考生应参加Academic类（简称A类）考试。申请移民或参加非文凭类课程的考生应参加General Training 类（简称G类）考试。
本教程收集的文章，题材主要针对A类考试。但近年来G类考试的阅读文章有两个趋势：1. 难度和长度均有增加；2. 通知、广告等短小型文章比例减小，长篇文章比例加大（甚至还出现过三个部分全部是长篇文章、无短文类试题的情况）。G类试题中第三部分的长篇文章，其长度、题型均与A类试题非常接近，因此，本教程中的许多文章也适用于准备参加G 类考试的考生。
A类的阅读考试有三篇文章，其中至少有一篇涉及人文社科题材（与社会、经济等人文领域有关），另外两篇涉及理、工、农、医，一般与科技有关。每篇文章的长度为800—1,000词，每篇对应13—14道题目，整套阅读试题总共有40道题目。所有文章均选自英、澳等英语国家的刊物或书籍。
A类阅读考试的文章题材多样，题型灵活，考生的阅读速度、理解能力更是千差万别。因此，没有哪种阅读方法是“*”有效的。考生应通过多做练习熟悉题型，摸索出适合自己的方法。对多数考生而言，以同样的细致程度完成三篇文章的阅读是有困难的，合理的时间安排为：花50分钟左右细致完成两篇文章，保证答题正确率，将剩余的10分钟左右用在另一篇文章上。那么如何判断应优先完成哪两篇文章呢？考试开始后，不要马上从第*篇文章开始逐词、逐行地读，应先快速浏览三篇文章：对比篇幅差异；查看是否包含图、表等non-textual information（非文本信息），是否附有glossary（词汇表）；除Matching Headings（段落标题配对）、YES / NO / NOT GIVEN（正/误/未提及判断）、Summary Completion（总结填空）等高频题型外，留意是否有其他特殊题型。通过这一两分钟的快速预览，还可判断每篇文章的题材，筛选出自己不太熟悉的领域。接下来，就可以按照自己选定的顺序开始做题了。
做题时，可先看一下文章的标题和前两三行，如果内容生疏则立刻换一篇，不要因为已经花了一两分钟，就硬着头皮继续作答。实际情况是，每篇文章主题不同，考生通常会对其中一到两篇的内容更为熟悉。若优先回答自己完全不擅长的篇目，不仅会增加耗时，答题正确率也无法保障，更为严重的是，还可能因时间不足而放弃某篇对你来说很容易得分的文章。因此，遇到题材陌生的文章务必先行跳过，留至*后完成。
本教程的阅读技能训练部分共收入80余篇文章，在对雅思试题进行细致分析之后，我们将这些文章按照其阅读练习题型分成8个单元：Matching Headings（段落标题配对）、Cloze（完形填空）、Summary Completion（总结填空）、Multiple Choice（ 选择）、YES / NO / NOT GIVEN（正/误/未提及判断）、Scanning for Answers（速找答案）、Matching（配对）和Integrated Exercises（综合练习）。使用本教程时无须严格按照此顺序练习，但第八单元（综合练习）题型更为多样，因此建议读者在熟悉各类基础题型后，再完成该单元的练习。
本教程的模拟试题单元共有7套题。这几套模拟试题的难度、篇幅均与真题相当，题型设置与正式考试保持一致。读者可分阶段按照实战要求完成该单元的模拟试题，以此检验学习效果，明确自身薄弱环节。
雅思考试中的阅读既不同于日常英语阅读，也不同于其他英语考试中的阅读。一般来说，日常阅读是获取信息的一种方式，而雅思阅读需要通过阅读文本解答具体题目，即通过阅读找到题目的答案。考生在多年的英语学习与应用中，已形成自己的阅读方法，这些方法在日常学习和工作中或许非常有效，但应用于雅思阅读考试时，易受时间紧张、题型特殊等因素制约，无法充分、高效地发挥作用。因此，编者建议：在做每项练习前，务必先读懂答题指令（instructions）、弄清作答任务（tasks）、明确建议用时（suggested time），再开始阅读答题。在使用本教程的过程中，既要注重提升整体阅读能力，也要注意摸索适配不同题型的个性化阅读方法。
目前拟赴英语国家求学的考生，一般需达到6—7分（band）才能被录取。由于各场次雅思考试中阅读试题的难度时常存在差异，部分场次差距较为明显，因此没有统一的分数换算标准。通常情况下，答题正确率达到60%—75% 可获得6—7分。考生在日常练习中，可参照该正确率评判自身阅读水平。
