FriedrichNietzschewasbornnearLeipzigin1844,thesonofaLutheranclergyman.At24hewasappointedtothechairofclassicalphilologyatBasleUniversity,wherehestayeduntilforcedbyhishealthtoretirein1879.Here,hewroteallhisliterature,includingThusSpakeZarathustra,anddevelopedhisideaoftheSuperman.Hebecameinsanein1889andremainedsountilhisdeathin1900.ShaunWhitesidehastranslatedwidelyfromFrench,GermanandItalian.MichaelTannerisaFellowofCorpusChristiCollege,Cambridge.HeisparticularlyinterestedinWagnerandNietzsche.
