BorntobourgeoisparentsintheseaportofNantes,Vernewastrainedtofollowinhisfather'sfootstepsasalawyer,butquittheprofessionearlyinlifetowriteformagazinesandthestage.HiscollaborationwiththepublisherPierre-JulesHetzelledtothecreationoftheVoyagesExtraordinaires,awidelypopularseriesofscrupulouslyresearchedadventurenovelsincludingJourneytotheCenteroftheEarth,TwentyThousandLeaguesUndertheSea,andAroundtheWorldinEightyDays.
VerneisgenerallyconsideredamajorliteraryauthorinFranceandmostofEurope,wherehehashadawideinfluenceontheliteraryavant-gardeandonsurrealism.HisreputationismarkedlydifferentinAnglophoneregions,wherehehasoftenbeenlabeledachildren'sauthororawriterofgenrefiction,notleastbecauseofthehighlyabridgedandalteredtranslationsinwhichhisnovelsareoftenreprinted.
Verneisthesecondmosttranslatedauthorintheworld(followingAgathaChristie),andhisworksappearinmoretranslationsperyearthanthoseofanyotherwriter.Verneisonewritersometimescalled"TheFatherofScienceFiction,"asareH.G.WellsandHugoGernsback.
