吴大猷(1907—2000)，中国著名物理学家、教育家，曾任北京大学、西南联合大学教授。1948年，被选为第一届中央研究院院士。1929年毕业于南开大学，1933年获得美国密歇根大学博士学位，1933—1934年在美国作光谱学、原子和原子核物理学方面的研究，1934年归国后开始其半个世纪之久的教学与科研生涯。20世纪30年代，吴大猷研究了多原子分子光谱，研究了苯及其衍生物的拉曼光谱，发现并证明了苯的同位素移动并对此作了正确的解释；30—40年代，在中国最早进行了原子多重激发态的研究；70年代撰写了《理论物理》专著七卷本，是海峡两岸和东南亚大学生、研究生物理学习的主要参考书。
吴大猷毕生献身科学研究和教育事业，为中国物理科学发展作出了重大贡献，在世界物理学界享有盛誉。
