　　拉贝于1908年来到中国工作，先后任北京、天津、南京西门子分公司经理。他在中国生活了整整30年，与中国社会各个阶层都有接触，因此，拉贝对中国社会有自己独到的见解。1937年日军向南京进攻前夕，拉贝从北戴河赶回南京，被一些外国人推为南京安全区主席。同年12月13日，日军攻占南京，进行了令人发指的血腥屠杀。金陵古城陷入黑色的恐怖大海。拉贝利用自己的特殊身份，在其私人住宅收容了600多名中国难民。在拉贝所负责的不足4平方公里安全区内，他和他领导的十多位外国人，不仅拯救了25万中国人的生命，而且捍卫了人类的正义和尊严。其间，拉贝在他租住的小粉桥1号院子内，写下了著名的《拉贝日记》。1938年春，拉贝回到德国后，发表演讲揭露日军在南京的疯狂暴行，遭到盖世太保的迫害。二次大战结束后，拉贝因他的纳粹党员身份受到不公正待遇。在他最消沉的日子里，南京人民为他募捐，为他寄赠食物，使他重新燃起了生活的勇气。1950年，拉贝患中风在柏林去世。
　　《拉贝传（英文版）》共9章，可大致分为童少年时代、在中国的日子和回国后的日子三部分，粗线条地勾勒出一个真实、全面和立体的拉贝。
