多项研究结果与教育实践表明,家长参与儿童教育是一项重要的干预策略。家庭具有直接或间接影响儿童学习与成长的多种决定性因素,家长参与对儿童学习与成长的引导和帮助,对儿童认知、语言、情感、行为、态度、社会交往和人格等许多方面的发展都会产生深刻而长远的影响。
自20世纪80年代以来,家校合作受到我国教育界的广泛重视,其在形式、内容等方面较以前有了巨大的变化,但是与西方国家相比,我国家长参与教育的深度和广度还有些许不足之处。
家长参与是美国0—8岁儿童早期教育体系的重要构成部分。美国*对各州和学区家长参与的途径、目标、内容等进行了规定。近年来,在联邦政府的引导下,各州在家长参与上加大投入,因地制宜地实施了本地儿童早期教育体系中的家长参与措施。近年来,越来越多的华人子女进入美国K12教育系统。美国2016年人口普查局的数据显示,美国华人人口已达452万,华人是美国亚裔中的族群。华盛顿移民政策研究所发布的《中国人在美国》移民研究报告显示,美国的中国移民是继墨西哥移民和印度移民之后第三大的移民团体。除中国移民外,在美华人留学生和访问学者的数量也在逐年递增,中国成为在美外国留学生的生源国。中国移民、留学生和访问学者的子女组成了美国K12教育体系中一个不容忽视的群体,而这个群体对于美国教育工作者来说仍是一个比较陌生的群体。在美华人家长们非常重视自己子女的英文学习,他们认为选择早期英语教育环境,尤其是英语国家的纯外语环境无疑可以使学龄前儿童受益更多,原因之一就是“使作为第二外语的英语学习时间更接近母语的习得期”。
面对数量激增的华人子女,美国K12教育和ESL(二语为英语者学习的课程)陷入了缺乏相关师资、教学资源、教学方法和教学策略研究等的窘境。因为即便同样是儿童,由于家庭语言背景的差异,在学习英语时也呈现出不同的特点,需要有针对性的指导。因此,了解在美华人家长对他们孩子早期英语学习的看法及参与英语学习的情况,可以为美国ESL教学工作者指导华裔儿童英语学习提供参考和指导,能对我国家长参与儿童早期教育的政策制定及实践提供借鉴。同时,了解美国儿童早期教育体系中华人家长参与的方法也是对儿童二语习得理论的补充。
本书以美国华人家长(包括华人移民、华人留学生、访问学者等)为研究对象,对家长参与孩子英语学习的看法及方式进行调查,探究不同家庭因素对华人儿童英语学习的影响,为中美教学工作者及国内相关政策制定者提供参考和指导。书中探讨的主要问题包括: ① 美国华人家长对儿童早期英语学习的看法以及影响看法的因素;② 美国华人家长参与儿童早期英语学习的方式和举措;③ 美国华人家长在参与儿童早期英语学习的过程中遇到的阻碍和挑战。
本书各章在写作过程中参考了国内外学界先辈与同行的诸多文献,部分采用了他们的观点、数据和图表。虽然文中和文后尽可能标注了文献著录和出处,仍不能充分展现对借鉴他们劳动成果的感谢。我的博士生导师(伊芙尼亚·金凯德博士Dr. Evornia Kincaid)和尹建军教授长期鼓励和指导我开展儿童早期教育的学习和研究工作,对我的写作提出了宝贵意见,在此谨表示衷心的感谢。同时,感谢我的家人提供的支持和鼓励,感谢他们一直默默地在背后支持我的学习与研究。

In recent years, the frequent cultural exchange and immigration from China have resulted in increasingly young schoolage Chinese children being sent to the United States. These children have constituted a steadily rising group in the K12 education system. Therefore, it is urgent for educators and teachers to understand Chinese parental beliefs and involvement in their childrens English language learning. The State Board of Education also strongly promotes the active engagement of parents in their childrens education in all Mississippi public schools. The purpose of this qualitative study is to discover common themes and patterns relating to Chinese parents beliefs and involvement in their childrens English language learning. Interviews were conducted with eight Chinese parents who had children either enrolled in kindergarten or Grade 1 from a suburban elementary school in a southern state in the United States. Data were collected through interviews with parents. Several emerging themes and categories were identified and explored.
The findings indicated that all participants got involved in their young childrens English learning. They highly valued their childrens experience of English learning in the U.S. and emphasized the shortterm and longterm expectations of learning English in early years. In addition, Chinese parents reported different patterns of practices and tend to be actively involved in their childrens English learning at home rather than mainly depend on schools and teachers. In an ESL context, parents are aware that their children are naturally exposed to English, but they still hope to create an English environment for their children after school. They are willing to devote money, time and energy to assist their childrens English development. The major roles that parents play in supporting their childrens English learning included the role of a facilitator, guide, financial supporter and fellow. However, the Chinese parents also reported a host of obstacles that impeded their involvement in their childrens English learning. Obstacles mainly included time constraints, English proficiency, financial pressures and other barriers such as lacking of authentic language environment.
The results have significant implications for Chinese parents in the United States, American elementary schools and English language educators to assist young children accomplishing the optimal learning outcomes in American schools.
