DrXieZhufanisaprofessorofbothWesternandChinesemedicine，DirectorEmeritusofInstituteofIntegratedChineseandWesternMedicineattheFirstMedicalSchool（alsotheFirstHospital），PekingUniversity.HehasbeenengagedinclinicalandexperimentalstudiesontheintegrationofthetwosystemsofmedicinefornearlyfiftyyearsandinvitedtogivelecturesinmanycountriesontraditionalChinesemedicineandintegratedmedicine.Since1985，hehasbeenappointedrepeatedlybyWHO（WorldHealthOrganization）asshort-terfconsultantortemporaryadviserontraditionalmedicinecoveringawidvarietyofsubjects，particularlyontheroleoftraditionalmedicineinhealthcare，trainingintraditionalmedicine，developmentofresearchmethodologyoftraditionalmedicine，standardizationofacupuncturenomenclature，andinternationalstandardterminologiesontraditionalmedicineintheWesternPacificRegion.Hehaswonthreenationalawards，includingScientificandTechnologicalAdvancementAwardforhissystematicresearchonthebasictraditionalmedicaltheoryin1992，ScienceandTechnologyAwardforstandardizationoftraditionalChinesemedicalterminologyin2005，andNaturalScienceAwardforhisworkonclinicalandexperimentalstudiesonanti-senilityclassicalherbalformulasin2006.Besidesagreatvarietyofscientificpapers，hehaspublishedanumberofmedicalbooks.ThefirstbookinEnglish，LecturesonTraditionalChineseMedicinepublishedbyShenFoundationCalifornia，U.S.A.basedonthelecturesthathegaveinSanFranciscoin1982waswellreceivedbythereaders.Sincethen，ProfessorXiehascompiledDictionaryofTraditionalChineseMedicine（1984），TraditionalChineseInternalMedicine（1993），ClassifiedDictionaryofTraditionalChineseMedicine（1994）.BestofTraditionalChineseMedicine（1995），andPracticalTraditionalChineseMedicine（2000）.TraditionalChineseinternalMedicinewasalsotranslatedintoGermanandpublishedinGermany（1996），andPracticalTraditionalChineseMedicinetranslatedintoItalianandPortuguese，andpublishedinItaly（2007）andBrazil（2008），respectwely.
