Thefirsteditionofthisbookwascompletedin1986，however，muchofthematerialwaswrittenlongbefore.Itfocusedonthedevelopmentoffourdimensionalsupersymmetricmodelsincludingsupergravitywithemphasisontheirultravioletproperties.Alreadyin1983，ourunderstandingofthefinitenessofrigidsupersymmetrictheorieshadledtotherealizationthatsupersymmetrywasmostunlikelytosolvethecelebratedinconsistencyofquantummechanicsandgravity.This，andthefactthatmanyaspectsOfsupersymmetrictheorieshadbeenworkedout，leadtoasearchfornewideas.Itwasinevitablethatstringtheory，whichhadbeenextensivelydevelopedinthelate1960sandearly1970swouldberevivedfromitsdormantstate.Werecallthatsupersymmetrywasdiscoveredindependentlyintwoways，oneofwhichwaswithinthesuperstringwhichcontaineditasasymmetry.Alsoduringthedormantstage，theoreticianshaddevelopedBRSTsymmetry，conformalmodels，thevertexoperatorrepresentationofLiealgebras，theuseofthegaugegroupEsforgrandunifiedmodels，evenwithinthecontextoften-dimensionalsupersymmetrictheoriesandgainedfurtherunderstandingofanomalies.Alltheseenabledthesolutionofsomeoftheproblemswhichtheoriginalpioneersofstringtheoryhadencountered.
