ThisistheonlywesternstudyoftherenownedRussianlandscapepainter,IsaakLevitan(1860-1900).Thisthird,expandededitionisfurtherenhancedbynewimagesandextrachaptersabouthisportraits,stilllifesandcityscapes;italsodiscusseshisworkingmethodsandassessestheinfluenceofhisoutputonlaterartists.BornintoapoorJewishfamilyinLithuania,LevitanwasabletoenrolattheMoscowSchoolofPaintingagedonlythirteen.Hemaderapidprogress,thegreatmerchantcollectorPavelTretyakovbuyingoneofhisearlypaintings.In1886hesketchedintheCrimeaandfrom1887spentseveralsummerspaintingintheVolgaregion.Levitan'spaintingscommemoratethearrivaloftheRussianspringandcelebratethequietbeautyofherlakesandrivers,fieldsandforests,oftenpicturedattwilight.Indoingthishesoughtsimple,well-lovedmotifsofthecountryside,usinganincreasinglyrefinedandlaconictechnique.HisworkwasgreatlyadmiredbyDiaghilev,whilehislifelongfriendAntonChekhovspokeofits'astonishingsimplicityandclarity'.Levitan'slatercompositionshaveamysticalqualityachievedbyfewotherartists.Beforeillnessclaimedhimattheageof39,Levitanwasabletotravelbriefly,butextensively,toBerlin,Paris,theAlps,northItaly,MunichandVienna.HisawarenessofpainterlydevelopmentsinEuropewastosomeextentreflectedinhisownart.TowardstheendofhislifehewasresponsibleforrevitalisingtheteachingoflandscapepaintinginMoscowandexhibitedregularlywiththeMunichSecession.
