NathanielHawthorne(1804-1864)wasborninSalem,Massachusetts,andmadehisambitiontobeawriterwhilestillateenager.HegraduatedfromBowdoinCollegeinMaine,wherethepoetLongfellowwasalsoastudent,andspentseveralyearstravellinginNewEnglandandwritingshortstoriesbeforehisbest-knownnovelTheScarletLetterwaspublishedin1850.HiswritingwasnotatfirstfinanciallyrewardingandheworkedasmeasurerandsurveyorintheBostonandSalemCustomHouses.In1853hewassenttoLiverpoolasAmericanconsulandthenlivedinItalybeforereturningtotheUSin1860,wherehediedinhissleepfouryearslater.
