FlanneryO'ConnorwasborninSavannah,Georgia,in1925.Whenshediedattheageofthirty-nine,Americalostoneofitsmostgiftedwritersattheheightofherpowers.O’Connorwrotetwonovels,WiseBlood(1952)andTheViolentBearItAway(1960),andtwostorycollections,AGoodManIsHardtoFind(1955)andEverythingThatRisesMustConverge(1964).HerCompleteStories,publishedposthumouslyin1972,wontheNationalBookAwardthatyear,andina2009onlinepollitwasvotedasthebestbooktohavewontheawardinthecontest’s60-yearhistory.HeressayswerepublishedinMysteryandManners(1969)andherlettersinTheHabitofBeing(1979).In1988theLibraryofAmericapublishedherCollectedWorks;shewasthefirstpostwarwritertobesohonored.O’ConnorwaseducatedattheGeorgiaStateCollegeforWomen,studiedwritingattheIowaWriters’Workshop,andwrotemuchofWiseBloodattheYaddoartists’colonyinupstateNewYork.Shelivedmostofheradultlifeonherfamily’sancestralfarm,Andalusia,outsideMilledgeville,Georgia.
