Covers: The volumes (Folio) are uniformly bound in dark green half morocco with pebble cloth covered boards; with spines in six compartments divided by raised bands, gilt lettering pieces to compartments two and four, gilt fillet accents to the remainder; binding however is in fairly dreadful condition; joints are cracked either in part or whole, or very tender; spines are heavily scuffed with varying degrees of shelf wear, the backstrip to V2 is detaching at the bottom; boards are dreadful, both heavily scuffed and scraped at the leather edge and corners, heavily soiled and stained, with some liquid damage, with the cloth lifting or in tatters in varying degrees - worst affected is V1 rear cover with a large amount of board exposed, . Inside: Both volumes have liquid staining: At Volume 1 the staining is just occasional, minor, to the centre of the lower margin and affecting the plates only, though no illustration is affected. At Volume 2 - the staining affects just about the entire book, at either the upper or lower margin or outer corners, or a combination of, to the first half of the book the staining is minor or fairly minor, becoming moderate/heavy to the last half of the book; throughout the first half of the book the staining affects only the plates, throughout the second half the staining is often visible to the text pages as well, at times barely, at others pronounced and some text and illustrations are affected. It is such a shame about the liquid staining as otherwise there is just very occasional minor foxing and brown blemishes to margins, with moderate foxing to end papers.. Pages and plates are crisp and bright with no rips or tears and the guard sheets are in very good condition, though some are toned. There is a presentation inscription in ink to the front end paper of Volume 1 in beautiful contemporary hand dated April 1893 and signed by Thomas Beswick and Oswald Arnold. The volumes are complete with a total of 130 leaves of photogravure plate, as called for. . There are no rips or tears. All pages are tightly held at the gutter. Gilt edges. Inner hinges with varying degrees of wear.
