The National Home-Reading Union was established in 1889 for the purpose of encouraging systematic reading.
It endeavours to add to the attractiveness and benefit of home-study, and especially to aid students who have not access to aural teaching. Lists of books on various subjects are drawn up by the Committee in consultation with experts. These are placed in the hands of members, who receive each month a magazine containing articles on the books, introducing their authors, explaining the circumstances under which they were written, anticipating difficulties, filling up gaps between them, or pointing out parts in which they overlap, and in other ways helping the student to gain enjoyment and profit from his work. The reading of the Union is divided into three sections, with book-lists and a magazine for each-the Young People's Section, the General Section, and the Special Courses for advanced students.
Members are encouraged to group themselves in circles " for mutual help; but, whether they belong to circles or read alone, they are at liberty to appeal to the Section-Leaders for the solution of their difficulties.
Hence it follows that this little book of notes on the Pocket Volume of Browning's Poems contains not only the explanation of difficulties foreseen by the Editor, but answers to questions raised by our readers. It is not unreasonable to hope that few obscure or recondite points have escaped this double search.
On behalf of the Union, the Editor wishes to give hearty thanks to the distinguished scholars who, in this, as in the other sections, have freely given service for the sake of the cause of sound learning, which the Union endeavours to represent.
