Della vita degli dei capisco soprattutto il momento in cui si nascondono; cosa sarebbe un dio senza la nuvola che lo cela? cosa sarebbe un dio logorato? Duino è la nuvola della mia esistenza. . . Principessa, le lunghe nuvole sottili trascorrevano rapide come nastri sul disco luminoso della luna. lo stavo alla finestra e guardavo le nuvole, che fuggivano rapide come queste;il loro ritmo veloce mi suggeri le prime parole della poesia, che mi sorpresi a sussurrare quasi inavvertitamente:"Cavalcare, cavalcare, sempre cavalcare. . . "
