  Duringtheperiodfromtheendof1950stotheearly1960s,aseriesofengineeringdisastersof rockmassoccurredoneafteranother,forexample,inDecember1959,thefoundationofthe MalpassetconcretearchdaminFrancefailedandresultedinafloodandabout450peoplewere killed;inOctober1963,alandslideofupstreamofthereservoirofVajontdaminItalygeneratedwave of100metersovertoppedthedamandkilledabout2500peopleofthedownstreamofthedam;in
  1960,acoalmineinSouthMrieacollapsedwiththelossof432lives;inourcountry,severalmines, suchasStannaryMiningBureau,Pangushantungstenmine,Dajishantungstenminewereminedin openstoppingmethod,generatedearlyorlatemanydilapidationsoflarge-scalerockmass.These disastersarousedthegalacticattentionofpeopleofrockengineeringworldandtheyjoinedinthestudy ofrockmassmechanics,makingrockmassmechanicseffectivelydeveloped,andformedan
  engineeringsubjectwithspecificallycategoryofinvestigation.Atthesametime,thecourseofrock mechanicswasarrangedinvariousspecialtiesassociatedwithrockprojectsinoverseasinstitutionsof higherlearning.Inourcountry,becauseofseriousdisturbanceofeuhuralrevolution,itwasjustin thefirstgrade(newgrade1977)afterresumingofenrolmentsystemofinstitutionsofhigherlearning thatrockmassmechanicsstarttobetakenasabasalcourseofspecialtyofminingengineering.
