In his landmark study of exchange and power in social life, Peter M. Blau contributes to anunderstanding of social structure by analyzing the social processes that govern the relationsbetween individuals and groups. The basic question that Blau considers is: How does social lifebecome organized into increasingly complex structures of associations among humans.Thisanalysis, first published in 1964, represents a pioneering contribution to the sociologicalliterature. Blau uses concepts of exchange, reciprocity, imbalance, and power to examine sociallife and to derive the more complex processes in social structure from the simpler ones. Theprinciples of reciprocity and imbalance are used to derive such processes as power, changes ingroup structure; and the two major forces that govern the dynamics of complex social structuresthe legitimization of organizing authority of increasing scope and the emergence of oppositionsalong different lines producing conflict and change.

彼得·布劳（1918—2002），美国著名社会学家，社会交换论的代表人物。在本书中，彼得·布劳思考的基本问题是：社会生活是如何被组织成由人类交往构成的日益复杂的结构。作者通过对社会交往微观结构的分析，论述社会交往如何导致复杂的社会结构的形成。社会交往的一个突出属性是社会交换，本书从制度层面论述了社会交换的过程和原理，试图用交换理论连接社会学微观研究和宏观研究。本书已成为当代交换理论的一部重要文献，也是社会学的基本文献。-摘自豆瓣
