作者简介:
科林斯(1824—1889)是英国小说家。他生于伦敦，父亲是个风景画家，他早年就读于海堡私立学校，12岁随父母移居意大利，15岁回到英国学习法律，学成后当了律师。1847年，其父逝世，23岁的他尝试写作，靠前部作品是记叙其父生平的《威廉·科林斯的一生》。1850年，他创作了靠前部小说《罗马的陷落》。接着又写了《贝锡尔》、《捉迷藏》，并认识了当时有名的大作家狄更斯。在文学的熏陶下，他成为一个流行小说作家，他的不少作品在维多利亚时代很风行的杂志《家常话》上发表，如《日落以后》、《死亡的秘密》、《我的杂志》等等，他的代表作是《月亮宝石》、《白衣女人》和《新济良所》。另外，《可怜的芬区小姐》、《一个流浪汉的一生》、《黑袍》均有一定的影响。《月亮宝石》是威尔基·科林斯创作很好时期的代表作，也是世界侦探小说目前的一部杰作。
内容简介:
《白衣女人》描写一件神秘的谋财杀妻案件：青年画师沃尔特·哈特赖特被聘到费尔利家当家庭教师，路上邂逅一个身穿白衣的女人，从谈话中得知她是从疯人院里逃出来的，出于同情，他帮她躲过了追踪她的人。哈特赖特发现，自己的女学生劳娜很像那个白衣女人。劳娜的父亲临终前将女儿许配给了珀西瓦尔爵士，但是，爵士看中的只是她的巨额财产。他与意大利的秘密革命团体中的一个叛徒福斯合谋，害死了知道真相的白衣女人，并把她的尸体当做劳娜下葬，又把劳娜当做白衣女人送回疯人院，劳娜于惊吓之下患上失忆症。与劳娜真心相爱的哈特赖特挺身而出，开始了营救劳娜、揭穿珀西瓦尔阴谋诡计的行动。小说以画师沃尔特·哈特赖特的叙述开始，作者让事件的目击者轮流叙述他所知道的故事，这种手法为后代侦探小说创造了吸引读者的新形式。
