作者简介：
亚瑟柯南道尔1859年出生于苏格兰的爱丁堡。他学过医，并于1882年开始挂牌行医。刚开业的时候，来找这位年轻医生看病的人并不多。于是，在等待病人诊的时问里，他开始尝试写点东西。
道尔开始写的一些短篇故事并没有取得成功，然而他的靠前部福尔摩斯探案小说血字的研究却旋即取得了巨大的成功。道尔以他曾经读的医科大学韵一位老师约瑟夫贝尔为原形，创造了福尔摩斯的形象。贝尔医生是个很聪慧的人，他不仅能为病人诊病，而且能从他们的外貌、背景和惯推断出有关他们的一些情况。于是道尔也赋予了福尔摩斯这种奇妙的观察和推断能力，使这位的神探能从委托人嘴里怪诞、神秘甚至有时荒谬的描述中发现线索。
