ThegreatFrenchnovelistwasborninRouenin1821,sonofadistinguishedsurgeon.Hestudiedlawbriefly,butin1844hewasstruckwithepilepsy–itwasthefirstofaseriesofviolentfitsthatfilledFlaubert'slifewithapprehensionanddrovehimtoleadahermit'slife.Havingbeenattractedtoliteratureatanearlyage,hesoonturnedhisentireattentiontowriting.Hisfirstnovel,MadameBovary,woninstantfameuponhispublicationin1857:Flaubertwassuedfor"immorality,"butwaslateracquitted.

Anavidtraveler,hisfundamentallyromanticnaturerevelingintheexotic,FlaubertwenttoTunisiatoresearchhissecondnovel,Salammbo(1862).BothSalammboandTheSentimentalEducation(1869)werepoorlyreceived,andFlaubert'sgeniuswasnotpubliclyrecognizeduntilhismasterfulThreeTales(1877).Amonghisliterarypeers,hisreputationwasextraordinary,andheformedlastingfriendshipswithTurgenev,GeorgeSand,andtheGoncourtbrothers.

Despitehisreputationasamasterofrealists,hewasnotfundamentallyarealisticnovelist.Flaubert'saimwastoachievearigidlyobjectiveformofart,presentedinthemostperfectform.Hisobsessionwithhiscraftislegendary:hecouldworksevenhoursaday,manydaysonend,onasinglepage,tryingtoattunehisstyletohisidealofbalancedharmony,seekingalwayslemotjuste.

In1875Flaubertsacrificedhismodestfortunetohelphisniece,Caroline,andasaresulthislastyearsweremarkedbyfinancialworryandbitterisolation.HediedsuddenlyinMay,1880,leavinghislastwork,BouvardandPécuchetunfinished.
