尺八之诺
明月孤峰尺八箫,心如沧海念如潮。
茫茫彼岸何由渡,吹澈一音即是桥。
——逍遥尺八
本尺八大师塚本竹甫临终时有两件事放不下。
件事是尺八传承。屈指一算,自心地觉心禅师将尺八从中国传人本,开辟了普化尺八传统以来,已经有七百多年了。竹甫是第三十九代传人。作为一个古典门派的传人,面对现代浪潮的冲击,他确实面临挑战。
竹甫早在儿子塚本八郎八岁时让他拜自己为师,授他名号竹仙。他觉得儿子在娘胎里听惯了尺八,有天分。所谓收弟子,不是举行个仪式那么简单的事。竹甫按照本传统,建立师徒关系时解除了父子关系。他像对待外来弟子一样对待竹仙,不受亲情影响,该严格严格,该严厉严厉。由于竹仙到了青春叛逆期喝酒打架,不听管教,竹甫觉得力不从心,便把竹仙送到师兄金仲章月那里去修。章月修剑道,武士修为的气概和令人生畏的眼神镇得住竹仙。竹仙于是有了第二个师父,修尺八也上了正轨。如今,竹仙已经有能力传承尺八。但是他们这些尺八传人并不演出挣钱,需要像其他人一样找份工作谋生;竹仙的职业是当消员。所以,竹甫还是担心他经不住时代的挑战,临终时需要叮嘱一番。
第二件事是吹奏技术。竹甫在古书上看到,古人吹尺八,走过几条街,声音连绵不断,听起来没有换过气。竹甫穷尽一生揣摩研究,一直没有弄明白这种连绵吹奏法。此事和其他不如意事使他经常闷闷不乐,借酒消愁。连绵吹奏法也寄托在竹仙身上了。
竹甫才五十六岁,吹奏尺八已达登峰造极之境,身体却承的消损,即将撒手人寰。他临终时向竹仙表达了两个心愿,一是在五十岁以前不要放弃尺八,二是学会连绵吹奏法。竹仙郑重答应了’并接过血脉书。所谓血脉书,乃是任命状似的文件,证明继承的正统,在本很好受重视。竹仙所接受的血脉书上写着明暗对山流(派)的承传世系:樋对山—北谷无竹—琢本竹甫。
竹仙答应竹甫的事,是一种庄严承诺,需要认真实践。坚持尺八相对简单,他个人能做到。但是寻找连绵吹奏法颇费周折。
竹仙与兴国寺住持山川宗玄闲聊时,提起竹甫一生寻找连绵不断的吹奏方法,他自己自竹甫去世近二十年来也做过不少努力,皆不得要领。山川宗玄建议:尺八传自中国,何不到中国去寻找?
2000年,竹仙通过山川宗玄,来到了杭州,找到熟悉语、从事中交流的杭州大学老师,也是他后来的弟子和翻译殷勤,还找到当时在研究中尺八交流的二胡演奏家孙以诚。竹仙在他们的带领下,来到杭州i原护国寺的大殿。护国寺被尊为本尺八的发源地,山川宗玄前不久刚带领尺八寻根团来此认祖归宗。竹仙取出尺八,接连吹奏了三曲古曲:虚铎虚空雾海篪。
然后,他们在佳音乐器厂找到了笛子演奏家赵松庭。赵松庭被认可为中国笛子演奏的代表人物,被誉为江南笛王。赵松庭听竹仙讲明来意,立即表示他指的是循环呼吸法。赵松庭原从唢呐吹奏中得知循环呼吸法,并把它运用到笛子演奏上。赵松庭请一个弟子当场吹奏了一段连绵不断的长长乐句,竹仙听得又惊又喜,请求跟赵松庭学。竹仙学过四五次后,还是无法掌握,甚是苦闷。殷勤租了条小船,把他约到西湖上散心。竹仙在水面上突然想起一两年前梦到在中国的水面上荡来荡去,宛如眼前情景,心情也开朗起来。两三天后,他掌握了循环呼吸法。
竹仙觉得赵松庭和蔼可亲,长相如父亲,便提出拜师。当时赵松庭年事已高,不过还是答应了,收他为关门弟子。第二年,赵松庭因病去世前,竹仙赶来探望。赵松庭对他说:“我有个小小的要求。你可不可以把尺八传回中国?”竹仙回答:“只要是老师安排我做的事,我完成。”他又一次做出了庄严的承诺,当时他快到五十岁了。
事后他对殷勤说,终于明白父亲为什么要求他在五十岁以前不放弃尺八。
从此,竹仙每年两次自费来中国,费传授尺八。他的家庭条件并不太好,妻子生病,他当消员的收入仅够家庭开支,再无剩余。他一直遵照传统理念,不利用演奏挣钱,但是为了来中国,他破例到一个会所吹奏尺八。挣够来回的费用后,他便来中国一次。除了杭州,他还到各地巡回。他后来退休,便专心在中同传授尺八,先在杭州设立白龙潭道场,后在浙江磐安大盘山设立青龙潭道场,为固定的尺八场地。近二十年来,他教过的已达数百人。
竹仙后来多次对弟子们讲起对赵松庭做出的承诺:“男人对男人说过的话要算数的,再难也要做下去。”(p24)
