On leaving Hampton School in 1972, Martin decided to ignore the limited careers advice he was offered, namely to join the army or become a teacher. Instead he embarked on a series of unremarkable jobs in the commercial world, whilst following his interest in weapons and military history, in particular the First World War. During the early 1980s he was very fortunate to meet and interview a considerable number of Great War veterans, thus ensuring that their experiences were preserved in the Imperial War Museum’s sound archives. In 1981 he was a founder member of what has subsequently become the largest great war society in the world, the Western Front Association.
He began writing magazine articles about firearms in the late 1970s and while unemployed due to injuries sustained in a parachuting accident, he heeded the sage advice of a friend who was at the time head of the weapons department at the National Army Museum. The advice was simple, ‘ Get out of industry and find a job in a museum.’ This was easier said than done, and in order to achieve this, Martin attended University College London, where he read medieval and modern history. Upon graduation it took some perseverance to find museum employment but he was fortunate to eventually be offered a position at the Royal Armouries at the Tower of London as senior curator of firearms. He once again attended UCL to gain a Master’s degree and embarked on a career with the Armouries that was to last almost 20 years.
Although he worked in the very broad field of commercial and military small-arms, his interest in firearms became more specialised and he developed particular expertise in the history and development of military sniping, a subject upon which he has lectured and written widely. Indeed, one of his few claims to fame is that he is possibly the only museum curator to have undertaken sniper training. His parallel interest in the Great War has, over the past thirty years, led to his visiting the battlefields of Flanders and France countless times. Motorcycling has been a passion since he was a teenager and most of his travel has been on two wheels, he and his wife Katie having travelled widely throughout Europe, as far north as the Arctic Circle. Although a breathtaking journey it was, by most standards, a rather cool one.
His enjoyment of writing has never waned and has increasingly been fuelled by requests from publishers for specific titles related to weapons and military history. In time, he suspects that he will have to be surgically removed from his keyboard. He has contributed to and appeared in several television programmes, including Battlefield Detectives, Timewatch, Two Men in a Trench, and the popular History Channel series, Arms in Action. He left the Armouries in 2006 so that he and his wife could set up a guest house on the Somme in France. He also operates a battlefield tour business that covers the Somme, Ypres and Verdun regions. He finds it somewhat ironic that having refused careers in both teaching or the army, he has found himself lecturing and writing on military subjects for most of his life.
