Accordingtothe14thWorldPetroleumConference，theultimateconventionalrecoverableresourcesofoilandgasintheworldare311.3billiontonsand32.8billionm3respectively.Alsoitisestimatedbysomeexpertsthattheresourcescanbeusedbyhumanbeingsfor100yearsorso.Butallthisdoesnotindicateaoptimisticexplora-tionsituation.Itisshowedbyavailabledatathattheamountofdiscoveredcrudeoilculminatedbetweenthemiddlefiftiesandtheendofseventies，withanaverageof5billiontonsayear，andreducedto1.8to2.1billiontonsayearintheeightiesandtoonlyl.0billiontonsatthebeginningofthenineties.Meanwhile，theproductionsurpassedthediscoveredreservesinthesameperiodgreatly.Sincethe1980's，themajordiscoverieswereonoffshore，inwhichtheAsia-PacificandSouthAmericaregions，whoseresidualrecoverablereservesamountfor20%oftheworld’stotalamount，accountforacertainproportion.Theincreaseofreserveismainlyobtainedbyfindingpotentialresourcesinestablishedfields，Between1985and1990，theamountofnewlyfoundreserves，8.9billiontons，onlyamountsfor25%oftotalincreasedre-serves，35.3billiontons，oftheworld，whiletheother75%ofincreasedreservesisacquiredthroughreevalu-atingtheresourcesofformerfields.Allinawordthediscoveryofnewreservesisbecomingmoredifficultandpetroleumexplorationisfacingachallenge.
