MirceaEliade(March13[O.S.February28]1907–April22,1986)wasaRomanianhistorianofreligion,fictionwriter,philosopher,andprofessorattheUniversityofChicago.Hewasaleadinginterpreterofreligiousexperience,whoestablishedparadigmsinreligiousstudiesthatpersisttothisday.Histheorythathierophaniesformthebasisofreligion,splittingthehumanexperienceofrealityintosacredandprofanespaceandtime,hasproveninfluential.OneofhismostinfluentialcontributionstoreligiousstudieswashistheoryofEternalReturn,whichholdsthatmythsandritualsdonotsimplycommemoratehierophanies,but,atleasttothemindsofthereligious,actuallyparticipateinthem.Inacademia,theEternalReturnhasbecomeoneofthemostwidelyacceptedwaysofunderstandingthepurposeofmythandritual.Hisliteraryworksbelongtothefantasyandautobiographicalgenres.ThebestknownarethenovelsMaitreyi("LaNuitBengali"or"BengalNights"),NoapteadeSanziene("TheForbiddenForest"),Isabelsiapelediavolului("IsabelandtheDevil'sWaters")andtheNoveloftheNearsightedAdolescent,thenovellasDomnisoaraChristina("MissChristina")andTineretefaratinerete("YouthWithoutYouth"),andtheshortstoriesSecretuldoctoruluiHonigberger("TheSecretofDr.Honigberger")andLaTiganci("WiththeGypsyGirls").Earlyinhislife,Eliadewasanotedjournalistandessayist,adiscipleofRomanianfarrightphilosopherandjournalistNaeIonescu,andmemberoftheliterarysocietyCriterion.HealsoservedasculturalattachétotheUnitedKingdomandPortugal.Severaltimesduringthelate1930s,EliadepubliclyexpressedhissupportfortheIronGuard,afascistandantisemiticpoliticalorganization.Hispoliticalinvolvementatthetime,aswellashisotherfarrightconnections,werethefrequenttopicofcriticismafterWorldWarII.Remarkableforhisvasterudition,Eliadehadfluentcommandoffivelanguages(Romanian,French,German,Italian,andEnglish)andareadingknowledgeofthreeothers(Hebrew,Persian,andSanskrit).HewaselectedaposthumousmemberoftheRomanianAcademy.
