  HENRY JAMES（1843-1916 ）.American novelist,play-wright,essayist and critic,James remains one of the most influential of the literary flgures who were writing at the turn the century.

  Born in New York of both Irish and Scottish ancestry,Henry James was the second of the five chaidren of Sir the day .His father held strong views on how chiden should be buorght up and Henry James,along with his He was tutored privately at home unti 1885and then was eduated intermittently inGeneva,Paris,Boulogne and .Bonn.In1862 he attended Harvard Law School but left after only a year.Encouraged by his friend and fellow-writer William Dean Howells,he Started to wite articles and reviews for various journals.

  The Ambassadors（1903 ）was first published in twelve monthly instalments in the North American Review.It Is One of Janes＇sfinal three novels and although it was by his own dmisson his favourte,it has sharply divlded crtics in their intepretaeions of it.
