CharlesMackay(1841-1889)wasborninPerth,Scotland.Hismotherdiedshortlyafterhisbirth,andhisfather,whohadbeeninturnaLieutenantonaRoyalNavysloop(capturedandimprisonedforfouryearsinFrance)andthenanEnsigninthe47thfoottakingpartintheill-fatedWalcherenExpeditionwherehecontractedmalaria,sentyoungCharlestolivewithanurseinWoolwichin1822.Afteracoupleofyears'educationinBrusselsfrom1828-1830,hebecameajournalistandsongwriterinLondon.HeworkedonTheMorningChroniclefrom1835-1844,whenhewasappointedEditorofTheGlasgowArgus.HissongTheGoodTimeComingsold400,000copiesin1846,theyearthathewasawardedhisDoctorateofLiteraturebyGlasgowUniversity.HewasafriendofinfluentialfiguressuchasCharlesDickensandHenryRussell,andmovedtoLondontoworkonTheIllustratedLondonNewsin1848,andhebecameEditorofitin1852.HewasacorrespondentforTheTimesduringtheAmericanCivilWar,butthereafterconcentratedonwritingbooks.ApartfromExtraordinaryPopularDelusionsandtheMadnessofCrowds,heisbestrememberedforhissongsandhisDictionaryofLowlandScotch.
